Grandfather Clocks A Brief History

Grandfather clocks were originally known as floor clocks or long case clocks. A song written in 1875 called "The Grandfather's Clock" told the story of an aging floor clock that stood in the George Hotel in North Yorkshire, England. Two brothers managed the hotel. The clock began slowly losing time immediately upon the death of one of the brothers, and upon the death of the second brother, the floor clock stopped working altogether despite numerous attempts to have the clock repaired. Eventually new management gained control of the George Hotel, but the clock remained in place as a tribute to the two brothers who had faithfully managed the hotel for so many years. The term "grandfather clock" caught on quickly after the song became widely known and since then, what were originally known as floor clocks are commonly called Grandfather Clocks and are a cherished part of our culture.

Over the years there have been numerous improvements to time-keeping devices and grandfather clocks are no exception. In mode times, a grandfather clock is a statement of excellent taste and firmly rooted tradition. Grandfather clocks are commonly a family heirloom that is passed down through the generations. Grandfather clocks vary somewhat in size, but are generally 6 to eight feet tall and lend a stately appearance to any room. You can also find smaller versions of grandfather clocks, which are known as grandmother and granddaughter clocks. Families for centuries have passed a cherished grandfather clock from one generation to the next, and today there are grandfather clocks with great historical and sentimental value. Some of the oldest known grandfather clocks are still used as the models for the grandfather clocks we purchase today. You will also be able to find more mode version of the grandfather clock in varying styles and colors.

Each time you see a grandfather clock, remind yourself of where this term originated and give a bit of thought to the long history of these treasured timepieces and heirlooms. If you do not own a grandfather clock you will be happy to know that it is easy to start your own family heirloom and you will be able to find the perfect grandfather clock in all price ranges.

Digital Globes

Globes are the spherical version of a map. Their spherical shape allows them to represent the earth perfectly. Globes were always in used as navigational tools as well as to understand various earths processes and phenomena.

The earliest globes were traced to the fifteenth century. Like maps, globes also show accurate directions, dimensions, distances, shapes and sizes of all the countries in the world. Most globe-makers use high quality geographic research and cartographic abilities to design globes. They are also updated regularly to take note of any changes in the worlds political, social, or environmental conditions.

Digital globes are those which use advancements in digital technology for representing the earth better. They have digital images over and inside the screen that keep changing as per the users requirements. The images, derived from satellite images, are made to appear on the screen, which is similar to a picture screen of a television. There are also digital raised-relief globes with clearly defined mountain ranges and water bodies. There are also celestial digital globes available. However, digital globes are not generally meant for commercial applications.

Virtual globes are also digital globes that can be viewed on the computer or any other interface. These may be simple globes used for classroom teaching, or they can be highly technologically advanced. Some virtual globes use state-of-the-art technology like satellite imaging and multiple GIS databases for real-time coverage. Virtual globes can be online or offline. These days, the application of virtual globes has become so common that they are also being fitted in cars in order to make navigation easier for the driver. They can provide detailed information, right down to a streets name.

Another kind of digital globe is the hyperglobe that uses virtual reality to present spatial effects. These are used for visually depicting certain geographic processes and phenomenon such as the earths inclination, space travel, and satellite technology, through three-dimensional geoid visualization, animation, and real-time presentations. These also have interactive cartometric tools for making the data globally available.

Faux Wood Blinds Make Great Window Coverings

Choosing the right blind for your home can be challenging at the best of times. One of the best ways to choose window coverings is to visit one of the many inteet merchants that sell blinds and browse through their blind gallery. It is important to create a cleaner look by matching the colors properly. Think about your room and how you would like your window blind to compliment it. If you would like to create a cleaner look, matching colors will make your blinds seem less important.

Here are five basic ways to choose the right blind color for your dcor. With vinyl blinds, you can find one that matches the window molding or trim or the color of the wall. You can coordinate with an accent color, match to a wood tone in your room, or your mini blinds can contrast with other colors in the room.

Regardless of your dcor, you might like to get wooden blinds or vinyl shutters, for when it comes to choosing color you'll find that some blinds are better suited to your needs than others. Fabric blinds are easy to contrast with almost any room, as there is a wide selection of colors and pattes to choose from. Do you have wall or trim colors that you would like to match? Why not try aluminum or cellular blinds? They can offer you a wide selection of colors, and are remarkably versatile and easy to clean. You will find that vertical blinds are made from many different types of material such as wood, plastic and aluminum.

Many different styles are available including roller, roman, pleated, vellux, venetian, and vertical styles. No matter which style or color you choose remember to not make your faux wood blinds or shutters the focal point of the room, but just something that blends in well to accent your other dcor.

Decorating With Light Set the Stage for Your Space

Lights can not only change the feel of your space but you can use it to highlight and accent your treasures!

There are three different and distinct lighting functions available to you.

1. General Lighting

2. Task Lighting

3. Accent Lighting

General lighting is often times the light on the ceiling in the center of the room. Such as a Chandelier, Ceiling Fans, Recessed Cans or a Overhead Globe. This type rarely offers enough light to satisfy our everyday needs. General lighting is just that. General. This is usually not the only source in a typical room.

Task lighting is used for a specific task and in work areas where more light is required. The task might be putting a puzzle together or reading a book. A lamp placed next to a chair would be considered a task light. So are the under-cabinet lights that have become so popular.

Accent lighting can make a tremendous impact on the feel of your space. This type of lighting is commonly used to highlight a important piece of art or brighten a dark coer. Accent lights are the most fun to work with because you can accomplish a spectacular change for very little money. Accent lighting can dramatically improve the feel of the room.

Track lights are a great example of task and accent lighting. The bulbs may be strategically positioned to light a work area and highlight a beautiful art piece At The Same Time!

Tip- To brighten a dark coer consider purchasing a small pot light. These little wonders can be hidden behind tables and shine a beautiful glow up to the ceiling! Very inexpensive and can be purchased at most discount and hardware stores.

Design Tips for a Spacious and Family friendly Living Room

The living room is such an important room of the house. This is where you receive your guests. These are some of my ideas for decorating the living room. In fact, the trend these days is to have a large room where all the different common activities like dining, working, playing, studying, TV watching can be done altogether. The idea is to get premium use of space available. Ideally, these different functions can be separated by dividing the areas with cabinets, shelves or partition. Another trick is to change the floor covering too. The living room is a busy area so it is crucial to allow wide pathways for easy entry into and out of the living room. You want to be practical too. Get a carpet that is easy to clean and maintain. I recommend getting leather sofa sets as they are easy to maintain.

You want fuiture to be flexible and multi functional too. Look for tables with storage space. Instead of leaving your keys, wallets and mobile phone on the table you can keep them in the drawers. It prevents cluttering. Look for sofas and couches which have drawers to keep your stuff. Choose storage chests that can used as tables, storage or seating. Save space by using storage units that come with sliding doors. Storage units with doors or drawers require space when you open the cabinet doors or drawers. Create the illusion of space by getting small fuiture which makes the living room much bigger. Put decorative items such as books on open storage shelves, glass cabinets and tables. Make sure they are arranged in a neat and clean manner as they are visible. Non decorative and unsightly items should be stored in closed storage units like cupboard and chest with drawers. Find light and versatile fuiture which is easy to move around.

For example, consider using steel and plastic chairs instead of wooden chairs. Look out for stools which are smaller and are stackable too. Are children playing and also studying in this area? Get them open storage boxes and baskets to keep their toys and books in them. What else can you do to make cleaning of the living room easier? Simple, throw away all your junk and rubbish. Throw away old and unwanted newspaper, toys and books.

Use light colors for painting of your walls. This makes the room look bigger too.You want proportion in your layout of fuiture. You want to be able to entertain as many guests as possible. Create several seating areas by gathering a few chairs and a small table for each seating area. Small groups of people can gather for casual chit chat and small talk. If there is only one sofa suite then only one person is the focus of attention and less participation is possible among the guests. Make sure the coffee table is within easy reach of the armchairs and sofas. Do put end tables and side tables next to chairs as well. Guests can reach their food and drinks, reading material and perhaps TV remote controls. You don't have to incur huge expenditure to update your living room decor. One simple trick is to re-arrange your fuiture and presto, it seems like a new living room. Painting fresh coat of paint is relatively cheap too.

Flag Display Cases

Flag display cases are actually simple frames in which a folded flag can be held safely, like a picture in a photo frame. They are available in triangular frames in wood and glass or acrylic. All large retailers offer the choice of customizing the display case.

The frames are mostly made of wood, though a little probing might lead you to an aluminum frame. Mostly hardwoods like walnut, oak, mahogany, and cherry are used, though well finished pinewood is a cheaper alteative.

Flag display cases are mostly triangular, with either a locking front door or sliding glass/acrylic panels or removable backs. They can be used either as table tops or wall displays. When choosing a flag display case, it is important to check if the door shuts tightly enough to hold the flag in place. Websites like FlagAndBanner.com vends display cases with Velcro backgrounds, so the flag is held in place without folding or crumpling. Flag display cases are also available as slightly larger flag-and-medal display cases. These are hut shaped cases with a triangular top portion for flags and the square bottom part for displaying medals and make excellent wall mounted displays.

Flag case stands or pedestals are also available on request by paying an extra charge. The stands are simple wooden platforms on which the triangular frame stands. It is best to choose display frames and stands from the same retailers or manufacturers to ensure that they match in design, color, and type of wood.

Customization of flag display cases is possible for size, material, name plate engraving, and embossing. Most people choose to have the name of the award, date, and recipients name etched on the medal flag case. The engraving is either done on a metal plate attached to the pedestal or on the wood frame or glass. FlagAndBanner.com also sells limited edition flag display cases with an embossed American eagle symbol on the glass.

Flags have high sentimental and patriotic value, and a flag display case chosen well honors the country and its citizens by honoring the flag and keeping it safe from wear and tear.

Common Decorating Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes

Avoid a Decorating Disaster with these simple tips!

Having a master plan is essential to success. Often times a person will purchase an entire fuiture grouping because it is what they see in the fuiture showroom. If you think about it, thats how most high ticket fuishings are marketed. Fuiture retailers want to sell you a sofa, love-seat, chair, accent tables and all the lamps in a grouping. The reason for this? They make MORE MONEY and the salespeople get to THINK LESS! This is an example of one size fits all decorating. In some situations this is fine, but It usually lacks character and personality. If you want to create a room that is unique and special... Here is a list of mistakes you can avoid.

Fuishings that do not fit the room.

This is the most important design element and should be addressed first. Many rooms contain too much "stuff" and make the space appear smaller than it actually is. Measure your room and bring the tape measure with you when shopping for large pieces. (Everything looks smaller in the store!)

Poor fuiture placement.

Often large pieces are placed too far apart. This does not create a comfortable, cozy conversation area. Consider creating two intimate seating arrangements in a larger room

The room does not function.

Besides looking good you will want to create a space you can live in. You will need to determine how the room is used and if there are any specific needs of family members or pets. Proper traffic flow is essential. You do not want to create a patte that constantly walks in front of the television!

Artwork hung too high.

This is quite common. The rule of thumb is to position the center of the piece 5 to 5 1/2 feet from the floor. (This applies even if you have cathedral ceilings.) Mirrors should never be in a dark coer. Instead place them adjacent a window. Remember what will be reflected and position items appropriately. Too many pictures on the wall. In this case, less is more. Think about what your favorite pieces are and showcase them! Remember it is a good idea to leave one wall void of accessories to create a resting place for the eye.

Improper lighting.

Often not enough light sources. This is common as many people will purchase two matching lamps and think they have decorated! (remember the fuiture showroom?) Essential to a properly lit room are General Lighting, Task Lighting and Accent Lighting.

Stuck in a the past.

Unfortunately, many of us are guilty of this. We may have items that were purchased twenty years ago. This is great if your theme is retro but if not, consider a few inexpensive purchases to update the decor.

Accessories out of balance or no theme.

Try to create a balance of high to low. Just as with floral arrangements, keep the items to groups of 3,5 and 7. Most importantly you should keep similar items together. Glass with glass, metals with metals etc. You will be amazed how this will work every time!

White walls.

Many people have a fear of color. They think that white goes with everything or have the mistaken idea that white walls will make the room appear larger. Dont be afraid to try a bold paint color. It will dramatically change the feel of the room and enhance the decor.(see selecting the right paint color)

Furniture Savings and I Mean SAVINGS

My sister went looking for a dresser for her daughter's bedroom. Searching the fuiture stores in the area, she was disappointed with both the quality and the cost of the dresser.

She could have purchased a dresser for under $200. However, the dresser was made of particleboard and knowing how her daughter, who would jam all she could into the drawers, she knew the dresser would not last.

She also found beautiful wooden dressers, but with a price tag of $300 and up.

My sister ended up going to an auction where she purchased a dresser for $50.00. The dresser is made of pine, absolutely no particleboard or veneer in it.

Her husband used a hand power sander and stripped the dresser down to the wood taking off the old shellac and most of the stain. The wood grain in the dresser is beautiful and the workmanship is top quality. My sister's husband used an oil stain to finish the dresser. You should see it now - wow!

My sister saved money by purchasing the dresser. The total cost once the dresser was completed was:
- Dresser $50.
- Oil stain $14.
- Sandpaper $3.

A total cost of $70, and some time, they ended up with a piece of fuiture that would have cost them well over $300. In addition, the quality of the dresser is tops!! My niece can stuff all she likes in the drawers without a worry at all!

My sister practiced being frugal - getting more with less money

So next time you are in the market for fuiture, remember to check the auctions. You may find you will save yourself a lot of money, and also end up with a good quality piece of fuiture!! As Ben Franklin said, "A penny saved is a dollar eaed."

Common Waterbed Sheet Materials

Several materials are used to make waterbed sheets. Waterbed owners can choose between many different fabric options when buying sheets. Each fabric has its own advantages. The three most popular waterbed sheet materials are cotton, satin, and flannel. Each material is comfortable and long lasting. It is up to the person who will sleep on them to decide which is best.

Sheets made of all waterbed sheet materials have a thread count which tells consumers how many threads are contained in each square inch of fabric. Most sheets have a thread count between 180 and 200, which is good for most people. Thread counts can be as high as 400, but these sheets are usually very expensive and arent that much softer than sheets with lower thread counts.

Cotton waterbed sheets are comfortable and durable. They are usually made of a blend that contains half cotton and half and half polyester. These blended sheets can be stiff and rough when they are brand new, but they get significantly softer when they are washed a few times. Other cotton waterbed sheets are made of 100% cotton with a thread count of 300. These sheets are exceptionally soft and silky. Cotton waterbed sheets usually have coer flaps that keep the sheet from slipping or moving when people sleep on it.

Satin waterbed sheets are luxurious and comfortable. Satin is known for its smoothness and for its bright, lustrous appearance. Satin has one side that is shiny while the other side is smoother and duller. The dull side is perfect for sleeping on while the bright side gives a bed a glamorous appearance. Satin is softer than cotton, but it is much more fragile. People should take extra care with satin waterbed sheets and be sure to launder them according to the directions given by the manufacturers. Satin waterbed sheets are usually connected to the mattress with sheet connectors that are placed under the mattress.

Another popular waterbed sheet material is flannel. Many people say that flannel is the most comfortable waterbed sheet material of them all. Flannel waterbed sheets are made of 100% cotton and are known for their softness and comfortable texture. Flannel sheets are probably the warmest of all materials as well. Many flannel sheets are designed to fit over the entire frame of the waterbed.

These are the three most popular waterbed sheet materials. They are all soft and comfortable. Buyers should be careful to follow all handling directions to insure that the sheets will provide many years of comfortable sleep.

Water Bed Sheets provides detailed information on waterbed sheets and discount waterbed sheets, as well as waterbed sheet sets, sizes and materials. Water Bed Sheets is the sister site of Down Comforters Web.

Everything you Need to Know about Lamps

Lighting can be one of the most confusing issues when making your house into a home. Finding the perfect lamp for needs is easiest when you know a little something about the types of lamps available. It is also helpful to know what they are generally used for. With this information you can chose the proper lamp to meet your needs.

The types of lamps vary and new ideas are being introduced everyday. There are still some basic lamps that almost everyone needs at one point or the other. Accent lamps are used to add extra lighting to a room. Table lamps are good if you have somewhere to set them and they are used for general lighting needs. Desk lamps are usually small and used to light a specific area. Floor lamps, like table lamps, are used for general lighting but are taller and set on the floor. Wall lamps are great fro limited space and are used for general lighting. These are the basic types of lamps and you will find that most lamps fit into one of these categories.

There are some special types of lighting that can make a lamp more suitable to your needs. Three way lamps provide three different levels of light from one lamp. To have a three way lamp you will need a special switch and bulb for that specific purpose. General lighting gives gentle light throughout the whole room. Task lighting is lighting that focuses on one area for a specific purpose. Protective lighting is used to prevent accidents or deter crime. These are just a sample of different types of lighting.

The last step in buying a lamp is choosing the shade. There are no hard fast rules, but there are some general rules about choosing the correct lamp shade for your lamp. The shade should be the height of the distance from the base to the bulb. It should be as wide as the widest part of the lamp or wider. The bottom of the shade should cove the socket. Lamp shades come in many different styles and some use the shade to express their style.

Choosing lighting for your home shouldnt become a headache. Now that you know the basics about lamps you can easily chose the right one for your needs.

Decorating is Entertainment A New Way to Look at Your Decorating and Design Business

What do consumers expect during a purchase? Usually not very much. They used to making sacrifices in their satisfaction in exchange for a service or product. What an opportunity! The old saying "exceed your clients expectations" couldnt be any more accurate. It is as simple as that. What is not simple is how to do it. How do we thrill our clients every time? The business of decorating provides a thrill a minute, however, both good and bad. You need to know how to haess this innate power of our business and tu it into gold.

How do we excite and please our clients? This is an emotional game, and emotions are evoked during the interaction with our clients, and they become evident as expectations. Our target market are those people that love to decorate.. They love the showing off their homes to their family and friends. When they invite people to their home, they immediately give them a tour, this is their entertainment.

What a wonderful position to be in! How do we provide the experience, so our clients can entertain her friends? To do this we need to look at our business as "theater". Everything we do needs to give the perception to our clients that they are buying an experience and not a collection of products. Every aspect of communication, expectations, appearance, sensory images, need to focus on this one outcome.

Face it, do our clients really need to buy anything more? Do they not have all they need? Our clients do not want to buy more things, they want entertainment, and they will pay a premium for it.

In the six scenes below I have named each category of business with a theater analogy. It is very interesting to see how the life on the stage can be inspiration to our business life in the world of decorating.

Scene One

(The Entrepreneur)

The Producer

As "The Producer", we must make sure that all aspects of the business, from the letterhead to the client fulfillment systems all say "theater". Nothing is left to chance. In a stage performance, it is a huge blunder if a stage hand is seen.

We should build our company around encouraging emotions, just like the entertainment industry does. Emotions are what our goves our lives, yet it is incredible that most businesses ignores this. This is the time to reinvent your organization. The ultimate client experience is giving the client exactly what she wants, which is customization. What luck, we are in the custom business! We provide the best products and services to exceed our clients expectations. This must be enhanced by being sure all other aspects and communication with the consumer has the same intent.

The role of the Producer is to make visible the vision of the organization and to give the company all the tools necessary to entertain.

Scene 2

(The Manager)

The Director

The role of The Director is to interpret the vision of the Producer. This is done by directing the cast (staff). The cast need scripts (systems) to ensure a similar great experience for the audience (customers) each and every performance (sale). The cast needs to remember that work is theater and they need to remain in character during the time on stage (at work). It is the role of the Director to understand that to create a successful performance, the Company must strive to make memories not just sell goods or services. The Audience wants to be entertained.

Think about your experiences with other businesses. Remember the two check out clerks chatting across the lane while your groceries were being rung up? What about when your dentist who fails to call you in advance to advise you that he is running behind one hour. There are countless poor experiences we can relate to. It is up to you, the Director not to allow the cast to perform its own drama.

Scene 3

(The Marketer)

The Narrator

The Narrator tells the story to the Audience. He brings awareness of the important aspects of what needs to be communicated. As the storyteller, we need to make aware to our target market that we exist. Any performance that becomes a hit, does so from great word of mouth. Word of Mouth Marketing does not happen by accident. The narrator has the ability to encourage the spreading of the word, so that the company can have a long and lucrative run.

Scene 4

(The Decorator)

The Cast

The Cast are the crucial link to success. They are the front-line providers of a great performance and long lasting memories. The script (selling system) needs constant rehearsing to improve the critics approval (more sales). The theater of improvisation is a required skill. Acting off the interaction of the audience takes a lot of practice. The audience does not want a choice of experiences, they want a great experience each and every time. In order to do this the actor (decorator) must engage the audience (client) and reach deep to give a memorable performance.

Scene 5

(The Client)

The Critic

The critic is the master of our destiny. The critic must be thrilled with our performance. During the time of the show (from the sale to the delivery) we should be staging a client surprise at every available opportunity. When every other shows in town are providing the same typical experience, it is up to you to offer a great client experience that will thrill. The Critics expectations are emotional ones and we must tap into them. The role of pleasing the critic is not the actors alone, it requires a great crew. From the Producer, to the Director and to all the extras we need to be focused on the same outcome: Keep them coming back for more!

Scene 6

(The Bottom Line)

The "Sold Out" House

How do we charge for a great performance? Should we figure what the actual cost of the production is, in order to calculate our ticket prices, or should we base our prices on the value the audience is willing to pay?

The prices we charge should be based on the value perceived. Companies that entertain increase the price of their offerings much faster than the companies that do not meet their clients expectations. You should charge for the value you add, not the costs you incur. A company with a price advantage can always be undercut, a company with a performance advantage can always be out performed, but when everything is equal, you need to make things unequal. The way to do this is to focus on the value given. You must base the prices you charge on the value you create.

To do this you must make sure all aspects of your presentation justifies your margins. You will need to make it clear that the prices you charge are well worth it, and your clients will be thrilled to pay you. When you price with the consideration on perceived value, you focus on the results, not the process in pricing. Everyone in the production must be committed to staging this concept, so that nothing that the audience (the client) sees will sacrifice the margins.

Of course our style of entertaining is not done in a theater. We instead sell "lifestyle entertainment". We are providing a service to improve our clients expectations of their own lives. We make their homes beautiful and this brings a high level of satisfaction. Every aspect of bringing awareness to our company, to selling and providing client fulfillment is about exceeding expectations and entertaining.

Five Quick and Cheap Ways to Decorate for Fall

1. Utilize the use what you have theory! Go through your cupboards and drawers to find items that can be used as props in your fall display. Find pitchers to use to hold wildflowers and dried grasses, bring out warm throws to toss over your couch, layer fabrics on your tables. (Remember, pretty blankets and quilts can work well!)

2. Take a nature walk. Gather organic elements that can be used in your fall makeover. Acos, pinecones, seed pods, bark, even stones can be used as display in bowls around the home. Press pretty leaves and strew them on tables and around centerpieces.

3. Bring out the candles! If you put away your candles for winter, now is the time to bring them to center stage. Gather groups of inexpensive votives and tie together with scraps of raffia.

4. Add scent to the home. Simmer apple peels and cinnamon sticks on the stove, or invest in a couple of vials of potpourri oil. They are relatively inexpensive at just a couple bucks apiece, and they last forever as you only need a few drops.

5. Celebrate the tastes of the harvest season. Keep apples and pomegranates out in bowls, store squashes on countertops, pick up a pumpkin or two at your produce stand (even though its not Halloween yet!) and use as a centerpiece, or pile a couple next to the kitchen door.

Most of all, take the time to celebrate this special season and appreciate the comfort we can offer our families in our own homes.

Help with Picking a Discount Ceiling Fan

To get the best fan for $150 and under, there are many routes you can take:

1. Buy used. If you're lucky, you might be able to get a $300+ fan for under $20. Of course, this is always hit and miss. Most used fans are missing pieces or have repair issues. This is really only an option if you are familar with ceiling fans and have technical know-how.

2. Similiar to the above: buy overstock and/or closeout products. Here you're getting a brand-new fan with warranty at a much reduced price. Many inteet lighting showrooms offer over closeout and overstock specials posted directly on their sites.

3. (the most important): Dont go for a fan with a lot of fancy design or features, you're paying for those things, not actual quality. For example, dont got for a fan with a remote or a stained glass light or a cutting edge design. Get the simple, stripped down, brass & wood (or all white) fan without all the extra features. Example: Casablanca Concentra. Hunter Sojou. I believe Hampton Bay even has a higher end, simple model, but I forget what it's called. The Cameron maybe? The Craftmade CXL. Etc.

4. Look on eBay for NIB and factory-renewed items. Often times you find a good deal, but dont forget to factor in shipping.

Finding the Basics of Rustic Design

In the world of interior design, most styles are fairly precise. When you think of the Art Deco style, for instance, there is a specific set of things that go along with that term, such as eccentric shapes and odd materials that come together into a specific style. This is not the case with rustic design. Certainly, the term brings up a number of images in most peoples' minds, but the problem is that these images differ from person to person. The very term 'rustic' can encompass such a wide variety of different styles it becomes remarkably difficult to pin down what exactly rustic design is.

As always the best way to define something is examine its most basic elements. In a field as broad as rustic design, this means first looking at some of the styles that fit into the rustic category and then finding what elements they have in common. The style that is most often associated with the term rustic in the United States is a take on the frontier style, based on life in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in America, specifically that of the people who lived on the forefronts of America's westward (and, to a point, southward) expansion during that period. This style in its most literal form is utilitarian for the most part. Things were constructed from the materials at hand, and often there was not much in the way of embellishment involved. This has brought about the log cabin architectural style as well, as well as the raw wood fuiture, most often used for beds and such.

A second interpretation of rustic design is the somewhat more mode descendant of the frontier style. It is, in many ways, closely related to the country style that is also popular these days. Like the frontier style, it is simple for the most part. The fuiture of this style is almost always wood with a stain or vaish to let the wood grain show. There is, however, more room for embellishment in this style, with woodwork and metalwork showing more fancy pattes and shapes. However, there is still the emphasis on simplicity.

The European take on rustic design is somewhat different. Much of the European rustic style works somewhat less with wood. The architecture itself is more often masonry than the log cabin style of the American frontier. Even so, things are kept very simple and reserved.

To find the essential core of rustic design, then, one must compare these styles and find their common point. In all three variations (as well as the many other variations of the rustic concept that are out there) the central theme is nature. Whether it is in the raw log construction of the frontier fuiture, the more refined woods of the mode rustic style, or the mason work of the European rustic architecture, nature is present. The rustic styles are about making use of the materials at hand and showing how remarkably versatile nature can be in simple but also very beautiful ways. With this in mind, one can easily combine the rustic styles for new variations, or work out whole new styles based on these concepts.

Decorating Ideas For Kids Room

Kids room decorating are an opportunity waiting to come to life! No where else can you mix and match a variety of paint schemes along with creative stencils, stickers, sparkles, and get away with it. Best of all, your kids can be involved in transforming their room into their own accomplishments while redecorating at the same time.

Some creative ideas on decorating kids bedrooms:

Fuiture - Make a whole play area from an ordinary bookcase. Choose bright colors that match your child style and add features such as cutout doors for a doll house or castle effect. Add texture materials to one or two compartments that create a window or door like feature. When your child has out-grown the design, you can easily remove the materials and doors and replace them with the original materials that you saved. Other ideas can be used with Lego or large building blocks to create more designs to match your childs age.

Walls - Tu your kids walls in a big canvas. Paint is the perfect solution and least expensive way to create a kaleidoscope impact while offering unlimited color options. Just changing one wall or adding stripes, borders, sponge or stamping techniques can bring new life to an ordinary room. Use wavy or splat design pattes, or tu one wall into a mural effect. Choose a bright base and pick accent colors to achieve the best effects.

Ceiling - Create a magical night sky on your childs ceiling with glow in the dark decorations. These can be fun and even comforting for your child to be able to lie in bed and gaze up at the night stars

Doors - Use wooden letters that spell your childs name and glue them on the door. Painting them in the theme color of your child room will dress up the door nicely. Closet door hardware can be replaced with wiggly handles or their favorite cartoon character. By matching the door hardware with wall plates you can carry the patte through out the room that accents their style.

Shelves - Using shelving materials can be the least expensive way to pick up the clutter and organize a room. Painting with the same colors or add design features with stencil or stamping can quickly dress up any room. Different shelve designs can also be used to border a window that eliminate the need for expensive window treatments.

Accessories - Large cork boards can quickly tu a bare wall into a busy space. Cork boards also eliminate holes in walls from nails or tacks that later need to be repaired. Wooden picture frames can be painted to help accent the room. Fans blades can be reversed and painted with designs to add cool effects when in use and then can be reversed when it comes time to re-decorate.

Decorating your kids bedroom is a great way to give them a place they can call their own and you may just find your kid spending more time in there!

Freestyle with Metal and Format The Milan FuoriSalone 2005 event

This Italian lifestyle project, underlined by the aroma of espresso coffee, is divided into three thematic areas showing different ways of rendering the multifaceted personality of today's ceramic tiles, an irreplaceable part of home decor.

The setting is decidedly unusual: the space, occupied by a mechanical workshop for the rest of the year, features a barrel-vaulted gallery facing the entrance courtyard.

Natural light coming through the glass roof lights up gallery, enhancing the fascination of the colours of Pietra Forte from Florence recreated in full-bodied porcelain tile (26"x13" square, from the Format collection).

The two designers had fun with the modular formats of the stone: almost as if trying to escape the classic right angles of ceramic tile layout pattes, they created a wave that rises up the back wall in a gradation of strips. Tall lights of light canvas, simple and comfortable garden fuiture and fresh herbal scents complete the natural scene. The courtyard also contains a small gazebo, built in all-black Lavagna slate (26"x13" square, Format collection), used to cover the floor and walls both inside and out. The whole is given an even more mode look by huge plastic plant pots and armchairs of minimal design, decorated with elegant floral prints.

The third setting is a glamorous mix. Bright red lights, designer chairs, inebriating essences and metallic surfaces(18"x18" Steel, Metal Line collection) are reflected in the mirror columns so that they are infinitely multiplied as if to disorient the visitor. In the evening, artificial lighting transforms the environments: our perception of the colour of the material changes, surrounded by lights and shadows in a new perspective that enhances its multi-sensorial dimension.

Decorating Kids Room Ideas

When it comes to kids room decorating ideas the possibilities are endless. Some ideas for kids room decorating ideas include using colors, prints, and themes. Keep in mind that there are seven major areas to interior decorating and the kids room is no exception. These seven areas include floors, walls, lighting, accessories, fuiture, plants, and fabrics or textiles. By working in all of these seven areas, you are sure to have a successful experience when you decorate your kids room. If you need inspiration, you can always browse the Inteet, books, or magazines, for photos that will trigger your creativity and help set the decorating wheels in motion.

You can use photos to help you get started, however, using the seven main decorating areas, you may not need those photos after all. Starting with the floor, decide what type of floor covering you will use in the room. This can include throw rugs, or even the great rugs with game boards perfect for kids rooms. Walls can include pictures, photos, wall hangings, and your choice of paint. For lighting tips you will need to choose from ceiling fixtures to stand up lights. Fuiture will be a big highlight to the rooms dcor. You can choose from a variety of kids style fuiture, from plain beds to extravagant theme beds. Plants for a kids room may consist of borders, wall stick ons, or fake flower trellises climbing on a bed post in a little girls room. Your choice of fabrics and textiles will include bed covers, pillow fabrics, curtains, etc. Accessories consist of the little items that you use to pull the theme of the room together.

One of the best tips that anyone who is decorating a kids room can receive, is to let the kids be involved. It is their room, and in the long run, they will be the ones who will spend the most amount of time there. Use the seven keys to decorating, but let the kids pick out the theme they want for their room. If they need ideas, help them by letting them browse through photos, and then you can draw up a decorating plan together.

When decorating the childs room, dont overlook the power of kids bedding and curtains. By choosing great kids bedding and curtains you can complete the room and pull all of the accessories together. You may even decide to pick out bedding and curtains for kids first, and then decorate the room based upon these themes. When a child has a room that he or she loves, not only are they happy, but also you will find that their room will stay well organized, and even bed time will become easier. A child will gladly go to bed in a room that they love.

The colors you choose for kids bedding and curtains will play an important feature in the whole feel of the room. You may decide to go with bright and vivid colors (as there are many options available when choosing bedding and curtains for kids, or you may want to keep everything in a calm pastel tones, that will help encourage bed time. No matter which colors you choose, make sure that your child is part of the decision making process. This will help ward off any future battles with your child when the room is complete.

You may also decide to choose kids bedding and curtains that have a theme rather than a solid color. Choose a patte that will help reinforce bedtime, and not keep the kids up all night. There are plenty of options to choose from, you can find bedding and curtains for kids in nearly every print imaginable. Try choosing a theme that compliments the rest of the rooms dcor and also your childs personality and hobbies. As long as your child participates, you will find that you can create the perfect room for your child, and have a wonderful and positive time redecorating with your child.

Do You Need An Interior Designer

All of us want our homes to be places of comfort and beauty. Some of us enjoy decorating and fuishing our homes and some of us dont. How do we decide if we need an interior designer or not?

Not everyone needs a designer. If you enjoy creating your own home and you are confident in what your are doing, it is possible that what you really need is a professional shopper. You know what you want, you just dont have the time or the expertise to find it. This is where the personal shopper comes in-to help you find a specific item or list of items. They know where the stores are and where the bargains are-and dont we all love a bargain? These hardworking folks can find you just the right table or those elusive accessories that give your home an individual look while youre at work eaing money to pay for all of this style and elegance.

If you enjoy the shopping experience and just need an item or two (a new sofa, a club chair, or a table to put beside your recliner), you can find the help you need right at the fuiture store. Better fuiture stores usually have trained staff on hand to help you choose a style and a fabric. Take along pictures, fabric samples, anything you need to match the new piece. Above all, dont forget measurements. At the fuiture store find a salesperson who is attuned to the look you are trying to achieve and with whom you feel comfortable. Dont hesitate to ask for a different salesperson if you feel that you are being pushed to buy something just because that is the flavor of the week. A good salesperson will work to help you find the exact look you are aiming for and you will be quite happy with your purchase.

However, a word of waing-if you are putty in the hands of an expert salesperson, or undecided what you want, or unsure of yourself, dont go this route. You will end up with a room that is never quite what you wanted.

So when do you absolutely need a design team? Here are 10 reasons to hire a professional:

1. You have a difficult room. If the room is oddly shaped, has too many focal points, or architectural details that are in the wrong places, you need professional help.

2. You have ideas, but dont know how to implement them or don't know where to start changing things.

3. You just dont have the time, energy, or the desire to do designing.

4. You need a major make-over, but you are on a budget. I know this sounds contradictory, but decorating mistakes are expensive, and a good designer will make sure they dont happen.

5. You have major work to be done, but it needs to be done in stages due to budget considerations or a growing family. A designer can set you up with a list of things to do and buy which is prioritized, and on a time-line.

6. You think you know what you want, but are insecure about whether or not your ideas will work.

7. You want to update a room without throwing everything out and starting over. This is a challenge , but it can be done. It generally requires quite a high level of skill. If you dont have a talent for this, get someone who does.

8. You have a piece or pieces of fuiture, paintings, and accessories which dont seem to fit your rooms or style, but which you cant eliminate because they are family heirlooms or simply because you cant afford to replace them. After all, you may not want to get rid of great-grandpas desk even if it is Victorian and you like contemporary.

9. You are trying to achieve a specific style or period such as French Country, Scandinavian,18th century, 50's Retro, etc.

10. You are unsure about color combinations, proportions, mixing pattes, composition and styles.

If you fall into any of these categories, or if you simply want a professional touch, an interior designer is probably the solution to your decorating problems. Your home is too important to your happiness and lifestyle not to have the comfort you desire. If you dont love decorating or you have a decorating challenge, then hire an expert and use your time and energy for things you really enjoy.

Do It Yourself Home Decor Made easy

Most people think that redecorating their homes should be left up to the professionals and their highly expensive salaries in order for the project to be done right or look good. Please believe me when I say that its simply not true. Homeowners don't need to have a remodel job straight out of the magazines. Any ambitious do it yourselfer can have a room looking sleek and chic for under $1,000. Remodeling with a budget in mind saves money, but also increases the value of your home.

Another cost effective way to remodel a room according to most is wallpaper instead of paint, wallpapering con suit anyone's need and budget, setting a mood and adding elegance to a room. Choosing the right wallpaper can make a room appear larger or smaller, providing an illusion of height for a room with low ceilings. Wallpapering can also add a design and patte that is difficult to replicate with paint. The average cost of a single roll of wall covering is about $12.

Actually, you would be surprised at all of the inexpensive but beautiful things you can find at your local Wall- Mart. My wife and I decorated our whole rental property with knick-knacks and accessories that we got from Wall- Mart for under $100 and a little imagination. By the time that we were finished, we had a showplace. We were very pleased with it. Since we've been together I've leaed a lot about home decorating. She's obviously better at it than I am, but I've got to say this for myself, I am better than average. And, on good days, I can come up with some truly original ideas.

Honestly, if you don't think you can afford that designer fuiture you see in decorating magazines, your wrong, Just go to your local thrift or second hand stores. You may find old, beat-up, pieces of trash items that with a little time and a little effort, you could tu them into real "show stoppers". Just look and see how sturdy they are. If they are sturdy, you can work wanders with them. If you are looking for coffee tables, kitchen tables, or night stands, if you like something and its made of particle board, its more than likely not worth the time and effort of finishing it. Try to find pieces made of real wood. Then sand it down smooth and finish it. You'll be glad that you did.

To get great ideas, go to the bookstore or your local library and look for any decoration or home decorating books that interests you. Another way to get really good ideas is to Google the words "home decoration" or simply go to my personal favorite home decor website: www.homedecoow.info. There you will find anything you need to know about home decorating that you could possibly want to know. That's a great website, you really should go check it out.

Well, that's it. And as always, I hope you found this article both entertaining and informative. May GOD bless you always, and in always.

Crystal Chandeliers

Chandeliers, however opulent a look they might sport, are basically fragile objects that require a favorable environment to flourish. The environment in this context is the overall dcor of the room in which the chandelier is going to be housed.

The importance of dcor is all the more critical in the case of crystal chandeliers, which may be five armed or three armed, candle lit or with little glow bulbs. A crystal chandelier can come in different sizes. It may be oamental or a no-frills affair. Whatever its look is, understated or overboard, a crystal chandelier doesnt blend in with all kinds of rooms.

For instance, a crystal chandelier looks out of place in a ranch house, complete with rustic fuiture. Similarly, a candle chandelier made of crystal, with a soft, romantic and archaic look to it, strikes a discordant note amidst futuristic fuiture in bold, striking colors.

Large, oate crystal chandeliers look best in a classically fuished room. The fuiture should be elegant and plush. In fact, Louis XVI dcor, with its emphasis on intricate carving, tapestries and massive pieces would be just fine. Chandeliers that are smaller in size but intricately carved also work well with Louis XV fuiture, which is all about small, dainty pieces. For mode rooms with clean-cut, sleek fuiture, a simple no-fuss less oamental crystal chandelier would be ideal.

A crystal chandelier requires elaborate maintenance. To retain its gloss and glitter, it needs to be taken down every once in awhile and cleaned thoroughly. As it is, chandeliers do tend to gather dust fairly quickly, and the more intricate the carving, the more the dust that seeps into the nooks and crevices. However, the cleaning doesnt require any chemicals; ordinary soapy water suffices.

The maintenance schedule may sound daunting, but owners vouch that a crystal chandelier lighted in all its glory is a mesmerizing sight indeed.

Digital Picture Frame

A wooden or a metal Picture Frame is a great gift idea or traditional keepsake to share reminiscences. But changing times need changing ideas, and with the inteet and personal web pages we can swap pictures with friends near and far. The technologically challenged, or computer novices, can keep up with Digital Picture Frames, the right gadget for sharing and displaying pictures.

The Digital Picture Frame is an LCD monitor surrounded by traditional frames displaying a single photo or multiple photos in a slideshow format. It is easy to operate download or sending facilities by connecting the frame to the inteet through a local dial-up phone number and existing phone line. Another way to watch a picture slide show is by inserting a compatible memory card without using a computer, digital camera or Inteet connection.

Certain models or makes of Digital Picture Frames support up to 12 megapixels image files (JPEG format), and are compatible with most digital camera-stored JPEG images and motion JPEG files. Some frames have additional capabilities that include playing short movies previously recorded with the camera. Some models store from 30 to 80 pictures, setting time between each picture to be displayed. The components of a Digital Picture Frame are a MemoryFrame system unit, a MF-810S deluxe stereo audio, and storage for 32 to 80 pictures. The stand supporting the frame is either vertical or horizontal, with an easy-to-use on-screen menu system, multi-function control buttons and automatic scaling of large pictures to fit the frame screen. A Digital Picture Frame is compatible with USB cameras, and also with USB card-readers with easy-to-view thumbnails, manual imaging forwarding, pause and reverse buttons, and 11 transition and display buttons. What is more, the frame is compatible with Flash (CF), SmartMedia (SM), SecureDigital (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), and MemoryStick memory cards with software utility CD-ROM, and USB cables, as well as AC power adapters with cable. It does sound complicated, but for the techno-savvy it is just another Picture Frame.

Digital Picture Frames are expensive, but with new technology overtaking our lives we do not want to be left behind. The best thing about Digital Picture Frames is that one can put them anywhere: on your mantelpiece, bedside tables, wall or living room, without having to switch on the computer or laptop to show pictures to anyone. The axiom that pictures speak volumes comes into play with Digital Picture Frames.

Picture Frames provides detailed information about picture frames, antique picture frame, custom picture frame, digital picture frame and more. Picture Frames is the sister site of Silk Trees Info.
